Get REAL, Project Update
In April 2012, a group called Get REAL made a video that went viral. It was entitled, ‘To My Grade 7 Self’. The video was a letter to their past selves, urging them not to partake in the homophobic bullying that they now as adults regretted. It was a powerful piece. A week later I interviewed co-founder Chris Studer and fellow members, Sophie Bertram and Chris Worndl about the project and what plans they had for the future of Get REAL. Chris explained:
The video was our way of trying to reach these students without actually being able to talk to them, but the ultimate goal is that we would rather be there in person.
and that’s exactly what they did. At the request of Megan Arrowood, one of the teachers at Glen Ames Middle School Chris, Val, Blaire and Mitchell went to speak to grade 7 there, and this is a video montage of their first big presentation tackling homophobic bullying at grassroots:
