Following the screening of Jobriath A.D. on Thursday, 29 March, novelist and historian Rupert Smith will be hosting a glorious event in the Blue Room at BFI Southbank celebrating the Glam Rock phenomeon. You can get dressed up (if you like) and enjoy an evening of rock ‘n’ roll glamour.
This is what Rupert writes about what’s in store:
Glam rock was a big explosion of gay energy and attitude – but where did Bowie and Bolan get their inspiration from? I’ll be looking at three of the ‘godmothers of glam’ – Jackie Curtis, Lindsay Kemp and Jayne County, queer pioneers whose outrageous style was adopted and adapted for commercial consumption.
Jobriath A.D. is an electric documentary that explores the abbreviated career of “the true fairy of rock”, Jobriath. Featuring archival footage, the impact of this early ’70s queer rock icon is measured, and through interviews the wealth of his legacy is explored.
