The Season of Hate
This last week has seen attention drawn to teens who have committed suicide because they were either gay or thought to be gay. It is the season of hate in the US with the rise of homophobic violence in New York, and the continued backward ravings of the Tea Party, which is not a political movement so much as a reactionary movement. One only has to look at Christine McDonnell, who thinks masturbation is a sin, that homosexuality should be outlawed, and that separation of church & state is not part of the US Constitution. Today many people are wearing purple to remember those who have committed suicide.
A host of celebrities have been pitching in, but I think one of the most important messages is from the US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton. This subject needs to be addressed in the wider political circles and beyond the pop culture firmament. And a class action for incitement to hatred should be levelled at the Tea Party, and its ill-informed, bigoted spokespersons, such as Christine McDonnell and Sarah Palin.
