Featured Song – Day 12
If dressing up butch and mixing up the genders is one of the freedoms offered to women by pop (think Gaga and her male alter-ego Joe Calderone or Annie Lennox in a business suit) then for gay women in the musical firmament it’s practically a responsibility. It’s certainly one that’s never been shirked by Kathryn Dawn Lang, the incandescently talented female Elvis-alike who, for this swoonsome slice of apple-pie pop, performed a nifty double bluff by ditching the quiff and the demob suits in favour of bomb-proof beehive, lemon chiffon and, well, bubbles. A woman dressed as a man dressed as a woman, living out hyperreal femme fantasies, tongue firmly cleaved to one powdered cheek.
