Featured Song – Day 27
Taking its title from a notorious and one-time banned book by queer novelist John Rechy, ‘Numbers’ was easily the sleaziest of the legendary Soft Cell’s string of, well, easily sleazy hits. When presented with it as a single from its fraut, neurotic parent album ‘The Art Of Falling Apart’ (the title said it all) the record company went into something of a tailspin panic and hurriedly packaged it up with a free copy of ‘Tainted Love’. The ploy failed to work commercially and only further served to alienate Marc and Dave even further from the mainstream that had once been theirs but which, they decided, they never wanted in the first place. Anyhoo, sexual addiction had never sounded so good – and “throw ‘em away like Kleenex” is still a fantastic line, isn’t it?
