Featured Song – Day 21
With its myriad references to drugs, prostitution and yer actual oral sex (“giving head”) one can only wonder at how in God’s name Lou’s timeless, wistful tribute to a coterie of Andy Warhol disciples ever made it past the censors at the BBC. But in the anything goes slipstream of Bowie, Bolan and co., make it through it most positively did, propelling the single into the UK Top Ten and making it the first – and last – UK hit to take for its primary subject matter the rites of passage of grimy trans superstars Candy Darling, Jackie Curtis and Holly Woodlawn and beefcake hustler Joe Dallesandro. And wouldn’t any chart from any era benefit from a song about ‘that sort of thing’?
