Featured Song – Day 7
If, like us, you saw pictures of Bronski Beat before you heard them, you’d be forgiven for expecting a sound that was angsty and thrashy – sort of meat ‘n’ potatoes new wave. But how those be-check-shirted, spiky-haired oddbods’ appearances deceived! ‘Smalltown Boy’ declared itself to be an era-rattling slab of atmospheric, immaculate, pumping hi-NRG pop over which soared a tortured falsetto vocal that barely seemed of this world. Twenty-seven (Christ!) years on its status as one of the landmark ‘80s hits is assured and it remains THE defining coming-of-gay-age statement British pop has ever produced.
