The impossibly glamorous figure of Dusty – quintessential ’60s female pop icon and the greatest British pop vocalist of all time – managed in her lifetime to attain prized icon status for both lesbians and gay men. Basically, everybody secretly (and some not so secretly) wanted to BE Dusty. That’s not to say her life was an easy ride – prejudice, alcoholism, struggles with her sexuality and all that industrial strength hair spray would have left their mark on anybody – but in the later years of her life she mounted the pop career comeback of all time whilst attaining, at last, a measure of peace with herself.
